I worry about this on a regular basis. Freelance web design is something you can pull off without a degree, but I feel compelled to get one anyway, but keep wondering if it's worth it

Web design is a one the fields you're probably better off getting a degree in. Creating a large portfolio of your work and learning on your own may be more helpful for your job but a degree is usually very helpful in getting a job or clients.

I guess the question is will your clients (or employer) be able to look past your lack of formal education and more on your actual merits. And will you be able to proof your merits before you start work. or will they immediately reject because you don't have a degree?

That's just my opinion though.
